Government of India had launched a mobile App "AarogyaSetu" on 2nd of April 2020 to spread awareness of COVID-19 and to connect essential COVID-19 - related health services to the people of India. It is a tracking app which uses the smartphone's GPS and Bluetooth features to track the coronavirus infection. The app is available for Android and iOS mobile operating systems. With Bluetooth, it tries to determine the risk if one has been near (within six feet of) a COVID-19 - infected person, by scanning through a database of known cases across India. Using location information, it determines whether the location, belongs to one of the infected areas based on the data available.
The App is touted to be the fastest growing mobile App with 50 million plus downloads within 10 days of its launch. Many opposition leader including Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor hinted at the security concerns of the App. National Informatics Center (also the developer center of the AarogyaSetu App) in response to the security concerns said, there has been no data or security breach been identified on the App.
On 5th of May a French ethical hacker Elliot Alderson reported that the App has serious privacy concerns and around 90 millions Indians privacy is at stake due to this app.
On 6th of May Elliot said, he will release a detailed article on the security concerns of the App. Elliot also acknowledges that AarogyaSetu App developers has silently been working on the security fixes on the App, as they have patched one security issue which he had found a month ago.
